 Chief Executive Officer  said fears about the \u201cdemise of China\u201d as an investment destination are \u201cmassively overblown,\u201d with the bank seeing brisk business in the country.\u201cOur business in China is going great,\u201d Elliott said at an AustCham Singapore event on Wednesday, even as he admitted that operating there is \u201cbumpy\u201d and \u201ccomplicated.\u201dThe ANZ chief made the comments less than a week after China announced a slew of  including interest-rate cuts and liquidity support for stocks to spur a slowing economy, that triggered a dramatic recovery in equity markets and changed the global consensus on the investability of the world\u2019s second-largest economy. \u201cEvery single country in our neighborhood has got some complications going on,\u201d said Elliott, adding that bearing with volatility as a bank is \u201cjust what we do.\u201d\u201cWe continue to be treated extraordinarily well in China,\u201d Elliott said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got amazing Chinese customers, state-owned and private.\u201dMost of ANZ\u2019s Asia Pacific business is through institutional banking and its international return-on-equity has grown to mid-teens, from around 3% when Elliott became CEO more than eight years ago. It\u2019s impacted our company and I\u2019m accountable for that. And so yes, there are consequences and we\u2019ll work through what those consequences will look like,\u201d Elliott said at the Wednesday event. \u201cYou can\u2019t change culture overnight.
