Vietnam\u00a0on Wednesday protested to China over what it said was an\u00a0attack\u00a0on a\u00a0Vietnamese fishing boat three days ago in\u00a0contested\u00a0South China Sea\u00a0waters\u00a0that injured several\u00a0fishermen. The\u00a0Vietnamese foreign ministry said in a statement that\u00a0Chinese\u00a0law enforcers beat the\u00a0Vietnamese\u00a0fishermen\u00a0and took away their fishing equipment when their boat was operating near Hoang Sa,\u00a0Vietnam\u2019s name for the Paracel Islands. China calls the Paracels the Xisha Islands. The\u00a0Chinese-controlled islands, also claimed by\u00a0Vietnam, are in the South China Sea, a busy global maritime waterway, almost all of which is claimed by China. \u201cVietnam\u00a0is extremely concerned, indignant and resolutely\u00a0protests\u00a0the brutal treatment by\u00a0Chinese\u00a0law enforcement forces of\u00a0Vietnamese\u00a0fishermen\u00a0and fishing boats operating in the Hoang Sa archipelago of\u00a0Vietnam,\u201d foreign ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said in a statement. The ministry delivered a strong protest to the\u00a0Chinese\u00a0embassy in Hanoi demanding that China respect\u00a0Vietnam\u2019s sovereignty, investigate the incident and desist from further such actions, Hang said. Vietnamese state media reported this week that around 40 people from two foreign vessels had beaten the\u00a0fishermen\u00a0with iron pipes, injuring 10. China\u2019s foreign ministry said on Tuesday that the\u00a0Vietnamese boats had been fishing illegally in Paracel\u00a0waters\u00a0without the permission of the Beijing government, and that\u00a0Chinese\u00a0authorities had taken measures to stop them. \u201cThe on-site operations were professional and restrained, and no injuries were found,\u201d it said in response to a Reuters request for comment, without specifically referring to the\u00a0attack.<\/pre>\n
