The insurrection disrupted a joint session of Congress that had convened to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election. In the weeks leading up to the joint session, Trump pressured then-Vice President Mike Pence, who presided over the certification of the results by Congress, to reject the votes. Pence later told Fox News, "President Trump demanded that I use my authority as vice president presiding over the count of the Electoral College to essentially overturn the election, by returning or literally rejecting votes. And unlike the Trump administration and its "zero tolerance" border crackdown, the Biden administration has not implemented a policy to separate migrant children from their parents. The DHS inspector general said children who do not attend their hearings can be at a higher risk of being trafficked or exploited, but immigrants can fail to show up to immigration court for a variety of reasons, including because the government does not have the correct addresses on file. That ICE has not issued notices to appear to migrant children does not mean those minors are lost — either literally or in the system.
