The opening of Betsy Lerner\u2019s debut novel, \u201cShred Sisters,\u201d is literally explosive: The adolescent narrator\u2019s glamorous older sister has crashed into their living room window, and is covered in glass shards and blood.\nFor Lerner, the arrival of the novel in her life was nearly as surprising.\n\u201cIt was like a shadow self that came out,\u201d Lerner said, \u201clike some portal opened. I did not know that I had an imagination.\u201d\nLerner has worked in publishing for decades, as an agent, editor and author of nonfiction. But she never considered writing a novel. \u201cI like the truth. Sometimes I don\u2019t even understand why people write fiction,\u201d she said. \u201cWhy not just stick with what\u2019s there?\u201d\nThen came the pandemic and long months of lockdown. She and her two sisters started exercising together via FaceTime, a way to keep an eye on each other during a profoundly upsetting time. Sisterly bonds \u2014 the tragedies and difficulties Lerner and her siblings had gone through together, along with the realization that \u201cwe needed each other, even when we couldn\u2019t stand each other\u201d \u2014 were on her mind and filtering into her subconscious.\nThat crucible unlocked a new creative side. Lerner received a bipolar diagnosis and has managed the condition for decades; she\u2019s written about her own struggles and eventual stability in \u201cFood and Loathing,\u201d her 2003 memoir. \u201cI\u2019ve read everything there probably is to read about bipolar illness, from the poets to the neuroscientists,\u201d she said.\nAs an editor and an agent, Lerner has worked on many memoirs, including \u201cProzac Nation\u201d and \u201cAutobiography of a Face\u201d \u2014 \u201ca lot of very messy people and stories,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m not afraid of them.\u201d\nOne of the most personally meaningful projects she handled was Patti Smith\u2019s National Book Award-winning memoir, \u201cJust Kids.\u201d\nLerner, a lifelong fan of Smith\u2019s, sent an unsolicited letter to Smith\u2019s lawyer to see if she might like to write a book; Lerner had no idea at the time that Smith had vowed to the pioneering photographer Robert Mapplethorpe on his deathbed that she would write the story of their friendship.\nLerner\u2019s letter was a \u201cgodsend,\u201d Smith recalled in a recent interview. When she learned of it, she was reeling in the wake of her husband\u2019s death and struggling to figure out how to support her family. And while she was straining under grief and newfound responsibility, she was \u201chaunted by this book project that no one knew about.\u201d\nThough she had a clear idea of what she wanted to convey, \u201cI had never written nonfiction before,\u201d Smith said, and was daunted by the project. The manuscript took years to complete. But Lerner, who had become Smith\u2019s agent, \u201cunderstood the task, and she helped me to the very last word,\u201d she said, including when Smith\u2019s first publisher dropped the project.\nSmith still calls it \u201cour book.\u201d\nLerner is a fierce advocate for the authors she represents, editing manuscripts before they\u2019re sent out to publishers for consideration, and offering emotional ballast.\n\u201cShe has a lot of understanding and compassion for writers, because she is one,\u201d said Rosemary Mahoney, an author who\u2019s known Lerner for 40 years. \u201cShe\u2019s particularly good at helping other people with depression, because she understands it so intimately.\u201d\nOver the past year, Lerner has built a following on TikTok, where she\u2019s shared passages from the diaries she kept in her 20s. The entries are lonely, angsty and uncertain \u2014 hallmarks of early adulthood that resonate with plenty of younger users who take comfort in her perspective.\n\u201cThe most profound thing that\u2019s come out of these diaries is finally finding compassion for the girl that I was,\u201d Lerner says in one video.\nShe first dipped a toe into TikTok because she was curious about what the app might mean for publishing. \u201cAfter I got past the naked cowboys and kitty cats and all that, I found the BookTok people, and I was blown away,\u201d she said.\n\u201cIt\u2019s just people loving books. And it\u2019s actually made me love publishing again.\u201d\nRather than feeling vulnerable about sharing intimate experiences of heartbreak and despair on such a public platform, Lerner is grateful to commune with her younger self. \u201cShe is with me all the time.\u201d\nWriting \u201cShred Sisters\u201d was particularly poignant at this stage of her life, an opportunity for her to weave elements of people she once knew and loved into fictional compositions, she said. Put simply: \u201cgetting to keep them around a little longer.\u201d\nBut as for her hopes for her readers? \u201cI just want to make people laugh and cry.\u201d\n<\/pre>\n
