\u4e00\u6bb5\u8be1\u5f02\u800c\u8ff7\u4eba\u7684TikTok\u89c6\u9891\u5f00\u59cb\u8bf4\uff1a\u201c\u4e0d\u8981\u770b\u5979\uff0c\u5979\u8981\u5411\u6211\u4eec\u63a8\u9500\u84dd\u8393\u548c\u8349\u8393\u8986\u76d6\u677e\u997c\u4e86\u3002\u201d\u4e00\u8f86\u6c7d\u8f66\u7f13\u6162\u9a76\u8fc7\u4e00\u5bb6\u9910\u5385\u65c1\uff0c\u5728\u95e8\u53e3\u7ad9\u7740\u4e00\u540d\u4f69\u6234\u7740\u7cbe\u81f4\u7ec6\u8fb9\u773c\u955c\u3001\u6df1\u8272\u955c\u7247\u7684\u5973\u4eba\uff0c\u624b\u91cc\u62ff\u7740\u88c5\u6ee1\u98df\u7269\u7684\u76d8\u5b50\u3002<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not look at her, she\u2019s going to try to sell us pancakes,\u201d the TikTok video begins ominously.\nA car drives slowly past a restaurant where a woman wearing tiny, wire-rimmed glasses with dark lenses stands outside holding plates of pancakes covered in blueberries and strawberries. \nAs the car rolls past the woman, she suddenly, seamlessly, appears in the back seat offering up the dishes to the passengers. \u201cWhat are you looking for?\u201d she asks.\nThere\u2019s a pleasantly bizarre energy to the video that makes it hard to look away. Perhaps it\u2019s the synth beats of the music, or the way the woman appears to stare beyond the camera and directly into your soul, but something resonated online. The video has been viewed more than 9.8 million times on TikTok since it was posted in early August and helped rocket the woman, Judy Wang, and her restaurant, Judy\u2019s Family Cafe in Galesburg, Ill., to viral success.\nBefore the restaurant\u2019s social media moment, Ms. Wang, 38, said in an interview that business at the five-year-old cafe, which serves all-day breakfast, was just OK. Now, she regularly sees customers coming in from out of state \u2014 some as far as New York \u2014  for a meal and to meet her. On Yelp, many recent reviews reference her social media content: \u201cWe drove two hours to visit after we saw her HILARIOUS videos.\u201d\n \nVictor Dantas, a 29-year-old waiter at the restaurant, helps Ms. Wang with creating the videos. He often guest stars alongside his boss and estimated their customer count on weekends has doubled since they started making videos in July. \nMs. Wang is just one of many restaurateurs from Mexico to Canada turning to low-budget comedy videos as a social media advertising tactic. The videos often have a slightly wacky, homemade quality to them, like this mall photo studio inspired shoot starring employees at a Golden Corral in the Bronx, which feels antithetical to that of a slick marketing campaign. It\u2019s less prime time commercial and more high school group project. There\u2019s a nostalgia factor, too. Many of these videos feel like a throwback to outdated forms of advertising, like the television spots of decades past.\nThat imperfection is the appeal, like a clip from the Bristol, England, restaurant Urban Tandoor parodying the final musical number from \u201cGrease\u201d complete with wigs and leather jackets. \u201cYou better shape up, cause I need a man,\u201d becomes \u201cYou better eat up and I need a naan.\u201d The entire performance is atonal, off beat and delightful. (The \u201cGrease\u201d video was posted last summer, but the restaurant continues to post similar content, like a Charli XCX parody from this August. Yes, there are more wigs.)\nTiffany Morgan, a social media strategist for restaurants, said this brand of content is not necessarily novel in 2024 but is becoming more popular as restaurants try to break through online noise by turning employees and owners into talent.\n\u201cBefore now restaurants would ask, \u2018Do we just show our food? Do we just show our drinks? What do people want to see?\u2019\u201d Ms. Morgan said. \n\u201cIt\u2019s so hard to get people to follow a business. People typically want to follow other people, so it\u2019s reaching that human element and doing that through humor and laughter,\u201d Ms. Morgan added. \nOne of her restaurant clients, Ayara Thai in Los Angeles, has been using this strategy with videos like one from this summer where, in honor of the Olympics, they spliced a clip of a diver jumping into a pool with a video of a piece of fried chicken landing in a dipping sauce. \nThis style of match cut editing has been popular for some time on the app, Ms. Morgan added, noting her team was inspired by a similar video from a brewpub in New Jersey. There is cross-cultural appeal for this style of editing, too. A viewer might not necessarily speak the language of a given restaurant\u2019s staff, but slapstick humor can be universal. \n\u201cI always advise my clients that you need to pick an age for your page, almost as like a human being in the world,\u201d Ms. Morgan explained. For Ayara Thai, that\u2019s a \u201c35-year-old millennial,\u201d she said, an age chosen as the midpoint between the two sisters who run the restaurant. \nOf course, social media fame is only as good as your last viral video.\nMs. Wang and Mr. Dantas of Judy\u2019s said they have started selling merchandise emblazoned with Ms. Wang\u2019s catchphrase, \u201cWhat are you looking for?\u201d They\u2019ve also got plans to keep the attention going online.\nHow, exactly?\nThe duo didn\u2019t want to spoil an upcoming video, which they posted Tuesday, but Mr. Dantas, laughing, offered up a hint. \u201cThere\u2019s going to be a motorcycle involved.\u201d\nFollow New York Times Cooking on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and Pinterest.
