The finance chief of China\u2019s central Hunan province fell to her death from a high-rise building Thursday, local media have reported, in what\u2019s being investigated as a criminal matter. Liu Wenjie, director of the provincial finance administration, fell from her 13th-floor apartment, news outlet Yicai as saying. In a separate report, Caixin the incident was being probed as a \u201ccriminal case,\u201d suggesting Liu, 58, was killed. The provincial finance administration a brief obituary on Friday afternoon that confirmed Liu was murdered, providing no other details apart from the exact time of her death. Caixin reported that two men who\u2019d visited Liu\u2019s home in a residential compound adjacent to the Hunan finance department\u2019s offices also died in the fall, according to sources it didn\u2019t identify. Yicai said the two \u201cwere associated\u201d with Liu\u2019s work, without elaborating further.Details remained sparse but the event attracted scrutiny in China, given it happened at a time when local governments are running short of cash to meet daily spending needs while their income gets squeezed by a real estate slump and a broader economic slowdown. Hunan was among 12 provinces identified by authorities as \u201c\u201d areas requiring more financial support last year.A local police bureau in the provincial capital city of Changsha, where the incident happened, it was investigating a criminal case that took place on Thursday morning. In a statement posted on its WeChat account, the bureau said a 58-year-old woman surnamed Liu was murdered and two other male suspects, aged 31 and 35 respectively, died in the fall. While it didn\u2019t give the victim\u2019s full name, in line with police rules, details such as the address and the age match the profile of the provincial finance chief. Local police didn\u2019t specify any potential motives behind Liu\u2019s death. Hunan\u2019s provincial government didn\u2019t immediately respond to a faxed request for comment. <\/p>\n
